An engineering maintenance manager with vast experience in railway engineering. When it comes to maintenance, he believes that one must understand the performance of the assets during the construction phase and when they are in use in order to determine the maintenance interval and strategy to be used to achieve maximum performance and lifespan. I believe in conducting regular inspections and assessments of assets and keeping records thereafter, which makes it easier to determine the type of maintenance that needs to be done before it fails. 1. Developing maintenance plans and executing track-related work. I rely on a maintenance philosophy and strategy that emphasizes preventative and condition-based maintenance to address issues before assets fail and require corrective action.
2. Managing a team of Engineers, Engineering Technicians, Track Inspectors, Track Masters, and Welding Supervisors. I have been mentoring Engineers and Engineering Technicians since 2011.
3. Conducting inspections to determine workload and allocate work to my production team. I also outsource work that exceeds our capacity.
4. Having knowledge of statutory regulations and standards such as Act 85, Act 16 of 2002, SANS 3000, PFMA, etc.
5. Managing a departmental budget consisting of CAPEX and OPEX. My annual CAPEX is around R50 million to R80 million, and my OPEX is around R60 million.
6. Experience in contract management and project management.
7. Involvement in the railway loops expansion, where my responsibility was commissioning the line as a client. I identified defects and ensured that the track was built according to standards.
8. Capable of handling multiple activities simultaneously and working under pressure.
9. Managing derailment sites on several occasions.
10. Playing a significant role in ensuring that my department complies with safety standards and procedures and maintains public safety, particularly at level crossings.

Primary purpose of current/most recent position:
To manage the maintenance function of the railway network in an allocated section using asset life cycle principles and procedures; to ensure a safe, available, and reliable railway line for the efficient passage of trains in a cost-effective manner, thereby supporting and enabling the achievement of the business goals. To conduct inspections and maintenance on railway tracks to ensure the safety of the trains and the public. This includes ensuring compliance with safety standards and other regulations, as well as maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure.

A proper asset condition assessment is needed to determine maintenance needs. A proper budget system is necessary to determine annual budget requirements. Sufficient resources, such as people, machines, and equipment, are needed to perform maintenance work. Lastly, a safety system, including a dashboard where all safety incidents are recorded and monitored, is essential.
